Dep Art Out, in collaborazione con la Galleria Thomas Brambilla, è lieta di annunciare la mostra personale dell'artista americano Bryan Hunt (n. 1941), che inaugurerà il 10 agosto 2026.
Per questa mostra, Hunt ha creato una straordinaria scultura site-specific dal titolo Standing Spiral. L'opera, alta due metri, è stata concepita in diretta risposta alla geometria architettonica iconica e primordiale del trullo.
L’opera presenta una caratteristica base conica che omaggia poeticamente le chiancarelle, i tradizionali tetti in pietra che definiscono il paesaggio della Valle d'Itria. Hunt mette, così, in dialogo la memoria del territorio con i linguaggi dell’astrazione contemporanea, intrecciando la fluidità tipica della sua ricerca scultorea con questa storica architettura rurale.
Collocata all'interno del trullo, la scultura dialoga con i volumi interni, guidando lo sguardo dello spettatore verso la volta zenitale.
Hunt sovverte la gravità architettonica, trasformando uno storico simbolo di rifugio rurale in un'eterea ricerca che si sviluppa verso l'alto. L'opera funge da vero e proprio axis mundi, canalizzando l'energia dello spazio interno e proiettandola verso l'apertura della volta, in un continuo gioco di tensioni verticali.
Bryan Hunt (1947, USA) è da sempre stato interessato all'architettura e all'esplorazione spaziale e ha lavorato come assistente tecnico al Kennedy Space Center e successivamente come disegnatore per un ingegnere meccanico. Nel 1968, Hunt si trasferì a Los Angeles e studiò all'Otis Art Institute. Continuò a vivere e lavorare a Los Angeles fino al 1976, e fece parte di una scena dinamica che includeva Allan McCollum, Lynda Benglis, Bruce Naumann e Chris Burden. Durante questi anni a Los Angeles, Hunt produsse un corpus di opere straordinario. La curatrice Sue Scott ha definito il 1974 l'anno cruciale della carriera di Hunt. "In soli dodici mesi, ha creato cinque importanti sculture che hanno portato il suo lavoro in una nuova direzione, gettando una solida base per anni di intensa creatività. Queste cinque opere - Empire State with Hindenburg, Nankow Pass (Wall of China), Hoover Dam, Tower of Babel, e la prima di una serie di aeronavi - con il loro curioso mix di arte, scienza, tecnologia e filosofia erano radicalmente diverse dalle sculture allora esposte in gallerie e musei". Dagli anni 70 in poi Hunt si è dedicato alla serie iconica degli “Airships” che ha sviluppato grazie al suo interesse per l'architettura e lo spazio. Gli Airships sono formati da strutture a forma di dirigibile e sono montate direttamente a muro, dando l'impressione di essere sospese nello spazio.
Queste opere rappresentavano una sfida per i seguaci del Minimalismo e della Land Art e una risposta sofisticata e idiosincratica alla scultura classica e moderna. A seguito di queste prime opere, Hunt si dedicò ad una serie di sculture che rappresentano i volumi di laghi, cave e cascate, che sono diventate iconiche.
Christoph Brockhaus ha scritto che Hunt "è stato interessato alla struttura superficiale di Rodin, al dialogo tra scultura e piedistallo di Brancusi, alle forme geometriche del Costruttivismo e al gesto dell'Espressionismo Astratto".
Bryan Hunt vive e lavora a New York City. Ha esposto in diversi musei e istituzioni tra cui: The Institute for Art and Urban Resources, The Clocktower, New York (1974), "Young American Artists" al Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (1978), "made by sculptors" allo Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (1978), "Decade in Review" al Whitney Museum of American Art (1979) e "Visionary Images" alla Renaissance Society presso l'Università di Chicago (1979). Il suo lavoro è incluso nelle collezioni museali, tra cui il Museum of Modern Art, New York; il Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; l'Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington; il Los Angeles County Museum of Art; e il Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

Dep Art Out, in collaboration with the Thomas Brambilla Gallery, is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by American artist Bryan Hunt (b. 1941), which opens on August 10th, 2026.
For this specific occasion, Hunt has created an extraordinary, site-specific sculpture titled Standing Spiral. The two meters height artwork was conceived in direct response to the iconic, primal architectural geometry of the trullo.
Standing Spiral features a distinct conical base, which serves as a deliberate and poetic homage to the traditional stone-coned roofs—the chiancarelle—that define the landscape of the Itria Valley. By intertwining his signature fluid form with the local rural vernacular, Hunt bridges the gap between historical heritage and modern abstraction.
Placed within the limestone core of the trullo, the sculpture dialogues with its internal volumes, drawing the viewer's eye up toward the vaulted zenith.
Hunt subverts architectural weight, converting a historic symbol of rural shelter into an ethereal, upward-spiraling line of inquiry. The work functions as a physical axis mundi, mapping a direct line between ground-bound masonry and the open sky.
Bryan Hunt (b. 1947 in Terre Haute, IN) developed an early interest in architecture and space exploration having worked as a technical assistant at the Kennedy Space Center and later as a draftsman for a mechanical engineer. In 1968, Hunt moved to Los Angeles and studied at the Otis Art Institute. He continued to live and work in LA until 1976, part of a dynamic scene that included Allan McCollum, Lynda Benglis, Bruce Naumann, and Chris Burden.
During these years in LA, Hunt produced an extraordinary body of work. Curator Sue Scott has called 1974 the pivotal year of Hunt's career. "In only twelve months, he created five important sculptures that moved his work in a new direction, laying a firm foundation for years of intense creativity. These five works - Empire State with Hindenburg, Nankow Pass (Wall of China), Hoover Dam, Tower of Babel, and the first of a series of airships - with their curious amalgamation of art, science, technology and philosophy were radically different from sculpture then being shown in galleries and museums". Hunt's most iconic bodies of works are the Airships which he developed thanks to his interest in architecture and space. These dirigible-shaped structures are mounted directly into the wall over the viewer's head and out of reach, giving the impression of being suspended in space. Hunt has revisited the airship shape frequently since the 1970s. These works were a challenge to the cult-like followers of Minimalism and Earth Art and a sophisticated and idiosyncratic response to classical and modern sculpture. Following these earliest works came a series of sculptures depicting the volumes of lakes and quarries and then the first of his signature waterfall sculptures. Christoph Brockhaus noted that Hunt "has been interested in Rodin's surface structure, Brancusi's dialogue between sculpture and pedestal, the geometric shapes of Constructivism, and Abstract Expressionisms gesture".
Bryan Hunt lives and works in New York City. He has exhibited in several museums and institutions including; The Institute for Art and Urban Resources, The Clocktower, New York (1974), "Young American Artists" at The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (1978), "made by sculptors" at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (1978), "Decade in Review" at the Whitney Museum of American Art (1979), and "Visionary Images" Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago (1979).
